Welcome to le vie dei Mulini ad Acqua
A journey inside of Sicily between mythology, environment, food and wine, drawn from the water and beautiful scenery Nature has given the island, is what we want to offer with the itinerary: "The ways of the water mills" in the province od Enna.
The milling of wheat originated at the mists of time. In Sicily, was introduced the system of water mills (molae aquariae), especially around Enna, because the abundance of the water was such that it could be used as a driving force.
The mills of the area were built along rivers, cascading, harnessing the power of water and were designed horizontal wheel, used as a water flow limited, as the rivers Sicilians, being torrential, the horizontal wheel work even when water levels aree low.
Our itinerary starts from the town of Leonforte, first from water sources. The Fountain of the Nymphs,
located in the homonymous garden, on the Granfonte road, Baroque, shows two statues: on the left of the fountain the river god Crisa, is the personification of the river of the same name, whose waters fed the fountain through the mouth of the lion and which were collected in a tank, once topped with ceramic tiles.
Following the SS 121, you can visit the ethno-anthropological and heritage of the rural culture museum of the nearby Nissoria, which exhibits ancient tools used for the grain cycle, from sowing to harvest, from grinding to prepare the pasta: tools precursors of modern appliances.
Towards Calascibetta, in the Valley of the Mills (Mancadarso land), stands the San Francesco mill, wrapped in a rich vegetation. Later, the remains of the San Nicola Mill.
As the areas are rich in archaeological sites that preserve testimonies very important and unique, visit the Byzantine village, also called the village in the rock, dating from the fifth century, in which you can see underground dwellings and the millstone, used initially for the production of wine and thereafter, for the production of other agricultural products.
The special nature reserve of Lake Pergusa lake, the only natural lake in central Sicily, belonging to the Geopark of Ceres Rock. The nature reserve surrounding it preserves archaeological sites that testify to ancient settlements dating back to the Copper Age.
Leaving Aidone we come to Piazza Armerina, about 10 km, reachable from the SS 288. Along the way, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the lush vegetation of the Reserve Rossomanno.
